Family News

September 2005

In August John and Nancy visited Durban, about five hours south of Johannesburg, for a two-day vacation. As winter is just e nding here in South Africa the beaches were perfect - that is, without any sunbathers! The waves were quite high to us a lthough we were told they reach upwards of 26 feet high at other times of the year! We were also surprised that the beaches were not built up with commercial buildings. I guess we must have been thinking about American beaches. We also noticed that there were very few seashells on the shore. Perhaps it has something to do with the area currents? The water, which is part of the Indian Ocean, was quite warm.
The children enjoyed their time as well spending the night with friends - Rachel with the Graham family and Nathan, Evan, and Ben with the Brosnan family. The children wondered if Mom and Dad would go shark diving in Durban, but were glad that their parents spent time instead buying each of them a souvenir!
