April 2005

One benefit of being missionaries in a foreign country is experiencing some of the local culture and unique products. In South Africa we enjoy a beef product called Biltong. Biltong is like a gourmet beef jerky - but without fat or grease. Here is what four local cuisine experts had to say about Biltong:

Hi. My name is Rachel Moore. I like Biltong because it is very tasty. I like traditional Biltong best. My Dad likes Peri-Peri Biltong - it is very hot. It comes in all different flavors. I like most of them except Peri-Peri. I think you should try some.    -- Rachel Moore

Biltong tastes chewy and beefy. I don't care for it.    -- Benjamin Moore

Biltong is a type of beef that is cut into strips. There are many different types of Biltong. There is Kudu Biltong, Ostrich Biltong, and Impala Biltong. Biltong is a bit like beef jerky. Flavors of Biltong include Peri-Peri, Lemon and Herb, Traditional, and BBQ. So far of all the foods I have had down here I like B iltong the best. My favorite flavor is traditional. If you like spicy food Peri-Peri Biltong is for you.   -- Evan Moore

Biltong is a tasty snack - kind of like beef jerky. Only I don't know what goes in it and I possibly don't want to know. It's healthy and probably better for you than a Slim Jim.
